Lieutenant Richard Todd parachuted into Normandy in the early hours of D-Day with the 7th Parachute Battalion (7 PARA). He and the rest of the men from the 7 PARA reinforced Major Howard's glider troops at Pegasus Bridge. 7 PARA held off repeated counter attacks from elements of the German 21st Panzer Division until relieved by infantry from the British 3rd Infantry Division.
Richard Todd would return to acting following the war and famously he portrayed Major Howard in the movie, The Longest Day.
